Will this filter work with standard hydraulic fluid, or do I need something special?

It's suitable for petroleum-based fluids, most water glycol, oil-in-water, and water-in-oil fluids right out of the box. Just keep in mind that if you're running synthetic fluids, you'll need to swap out the standard Buna-N seals for optional Viton® seals.

got a tight reservoir setup. is this one of them in-tank return filters that helps cut down on leak points?

In-tank mounting is the whole idea with the HF4RT return filter, so you are not stacking extra external fittings in the return line. That layout helps save space and reduces potential leak points compared to a more external hydraulic connections approach.
