got a 1-1/4 MNPT setup already. is this the kind of coupling that threads right on, or am I missing something?

With the Scovill style permanent MNPT connection, it is meant to mate to an MNPT threaded setup in a 1-1/4 size. It is built as a permanent coupling, so it is focused on a secure threaded connection rather than a quick swap style.

No check valve on this thing, is that gonna be a problem for how I'm planning to use it, or is that just standard for this style of coupling?

For Scovill style permanent couplings like this one, the absence of a check valve is completely normal and expected. These are built for fixed, permanent connections rather than quick-disconnect applications where a check valve would prevent fluid backflow during separation. If your setup doesn't require disconnection under pressure, you won't miss it one bit.
