To assure the best motor life, run it for about an hour at 30% of rated pressure before putting it to work at full load. Be sure the motor is filled with fluid before you start.

Premium quality anti-wear hydraulic fluid is what this motor calls for. Beyond fluid type, viscosity matters quite a bit too. At operating temperature, you want the viscosity to be the highest of either 100 SUS or whatever you get from this formula: (20 x PSI) divided by RPM equals SUS. Running too thin of a fluid, especially at higher pressures and lower speeds, can wear the internals down faster than you'd expect. Your buddy's approach is the kind of thing that'll seem fine for a while and then cause a headache at the worst possible time.
