trying to swap out an old Hansen socket, is this GR603 the female half with a 1/4-18 NPTF male thread?

Fit-wise, GR603 is the socket (female half) and it has a 1/4-18 IN NPTF male pipe thread on the end, with a 1/4 IN body size.

What kind of thread is on this fitting, and will it seal up tight without a bunch of extra tape or sealant?

The male end on this coupling is 1/4-18 NPTF, which is a dryseal pipe thread. NPTF threads are engineered to form a pressure-tight seal through metal-to-metal contact, so under normal installation conditions you get a reliable seal without relying heavily on tape or compound. That said, many techs still apply a light amount of thread sealant out of habit on pneumatic fittings, and there's nothing wrong with that approach either.
