what exactly does the "inverted" part mean on this fitting, is that talking about the thread style or the flare type?

Inverted refers to the flare seat orientation. On a standard flare, the cone faces outward. On an inverted fitting, that cone faces inward toward the fitting body, which is a common configuration on fuel and brake line connections, especially on older domestic vehicles and a lot of agricultural equipment. The M14 x 1.5 end is the female metric thread side, and the 5/16 FuelFlex side connects to Brakequip's FuelFlex line in that size.
