Does this bulkhead coupling come with a check valve built in, or is that something I'd need to add separate?

No check valve is included with this coupling. The FFH08-14/34S M is a straightforward bulkhead connection piece, no frills attached. If your system needs a check valve, that would have to be sourced and installed separately elsewhere in the line.
