Got a line running 1/2 NPT female on one end and need to hook it to a JIC 37 degree male fitting, this the right adapter for that?

That's what this piece is made for. The female end threads onto a 1/2-14 NPT port and the male end is a 7/8-14 JIC 37 degree flare, so it bridges those two connection types in a straight inline configuration. It's an Eaton Aeroquip 2022 Series adapter, which shows up regularly in hydraulic hydraulic connections where you're mixing pipe thread ports with flare-style hose ends.

got a hose end with a 7/8-14 JIC flare nut, will this adapter screw into that and give me 1/2-14 female NPT on the other side?

Function-wise, it bridges those two connection types in a straight adapter. One end is 7/8-14 male JIC with a 37 degree flare, and the other end is 1/2-14 female NPT (NPTF internal pipe), so it’s meant to mate a JIC 37 flare connection to a female NPT port.
