trying to hook a 1/4-18 female npt port over to a 7/16-20 jic line, is this the right straight adapter?

For that exact thread match, yes. One end is 1/4-18 female NPTF and the other end is 7/16-20 male SAE 37 degree flare, which is the common JIC 37 style. It is a straight steel pipe to 37 degree flare adapter.

got a 1/4 female NPT port on a pump housing and need to connect it to a JIC line -- will this adapter make that jump straight across?

That's exactly what this fitting handles. One end is 1/4-18 female NPT and the other is 7/16-20 male JIC with a 37 degree flare, all in a straight configuration. So if your pump port is female NPT and your hose or tubing end is JIC, this bridges them without any inline bends or offsets.
