this hose comes in a 50ft cut length, is that the only way it's sold, or can I get a shorter piece if I don't need the whole run?

Cut-length hose is sold as a 50-foot section, so that's what you'll receive. If your application only calls for a shorter run, you'd be working with whatever footage is left over after cutting to your needed length. Sold as a 50 ft cut length hose, so you are getting one continuous 50 foot section rather than a shorter piece.
