Can you use this with just any old hose, or does it need to be Aeroquip?

It's designed for use with Aeroquip GH134 Multi-Refrigerant hose to make sure the connection is reliable. Using other hoses might not be so safe.

what tool do i need to close the clips on this thing? got the fitting but not sure if i need something special or if any pliers will do

You'll want the FT1357 Clip Closing Pliers specifically for this job. Regular pliers won't position correctly on the clip connection points. The FT1357 needs to sit square on those points and stay square through the whole close, so using a substitute risks a bad seal or a damaged clip. It's a dedicated tool for this system and worth having on hand before you start.

trying to replace an old straight fitting, how do i tell if this is the right one for my -12 hose?

Match up the connection and hose callouts: this one is a straight E-Z Clip Series fitting for a -12 hose, with a 7/8-18 male O-ring end and a short pilot nipple. It is meant to be used with GH134 Multi-Refrigerant hose, using the E-Z Clip cage and two clips that go with the fitting.
