putting together an A/C hose assembly and don't have access to a crimper, does this fitting actually work without one?

No crimping equipment needed at all. The E-Z Clip system uses a clip-and-cage method where you slide two clips onto the hose, push the lubricated nipple in to shoulder, snap the cage into the nipple groove, and then close the clips with Eaton Aeroquip FT1357 Clip Closing Pliers. That's the only tool required for the connection itself. Just make sure the hose end is cut square before you start, and use compressor oil compatible with your refrigeration or A/C system to lubricate the nipple before insertion. Skipping that lubrication step makes the nipple significantly harder to seat properly.

trying to hook this up in a tight spot, is it a 90 degree elbow ORS swivel and what thread is on it?

For tight routing, it uses a 90 degree elbow body with a female O-Ring Face Seal swivel end. The swivel thread on that ORS end is 1-14.

GH134 Multi-Refrigerant hose is what this fitting is designed for.
