Does this fitting need any kind of crimping machine to put together, or can you assemble it out in the field with basic hand tools?

No powered crimping equipment needed at all. The E-Z Clip system goes together with a pair of FT1357 Clip Closing Pliers, which are the specific tool called out for closing the clips once everything is seated. You cut the hose square, slip two clips onto the end, oil the nipple with compressor oil, push the nipple in flush to the shoulder, snap the cage into the groove, slide the clips over the cage arms, and close them down with the pliers. That's the whole process. Compact spaces are no problem either since you're not dragging a crimper into the equation.
