Putting one of these on a GH134 hose out in the shop, and I ain't got a crimper. This gonna work without one?

No crimper needed at all. The whole point of the E-Z Clip system is that you close the clips with the FT1357 Clip Closing Pliers, which are basically a specialized hand tool. You slip two clips onto the cut hose end, lubricate the nipple with compressor oil, push the nipple in until it seats flush against the hose shoulder, snap the cage into the nipple groove, slide the clips into the cage arm channels, and close them with the pliers. No power supply, no hydraulic crimper, no press. Just make sure your hose cut is square before you start.

Will this splicer work with just any hose, or does it need something special?

This splicer is built for use with GH134 Multi-Refrigerant hose, so it's best to stick with that to ensure a good fit and no leaks.
