trying to splice a -06 A/C hose without dragging out a crimper, is this the right kind of fitting?

For joining a -06 hose in refrigeration or air conditioning service, the E Z Clip splicer is made to go together with clips and a cage, so you do not need a power supply or crimp equipment. It uses a nipple assembly with two pre installed black o rings for sealing, and you close the clips with the FT1357 clip closing pliers.
