what's the max pressure this poppet style cartridge can handle before it starts causing problems?

Poppet type versions of the DPS2-20 series are rated up to 5000 PSI operating pressure. That puts it well above the spool type, which tops out at 4200 PSI. If your system runs at higher pressures, the poppet style is the one to go with between the two options.
