trying to swap a motor on a mower, how do i know this one matches up on the mount and shaft?

Fit comes down to the mounting style, shaft style, and port threads. This motor is a wheel mounting flange style with a 1-1/2 inch straight keyed shaft, and it uses 7/8 inch SAE O-ring ports with .875-14 UNF-2B threads, so those three details need to line up with what you are replacing.

Is this motor meant for wheels, or can I use it for something else?

It's made with a wheel mounting flange, but the applications list includes scissor lifts, boom lifts, industrial sweepers and mowers. So, it's versatile.
