What's this strap actually made of, and can it hold up in a hot shop environment?

Built from 1050 ballistic nylon at 3.18mm thick, with a nylon backing and a urethane coating on top, it's a genuinely tough piece of hardware. Rated for ambient temps up to 175 degrees F, so a warm shop or engine bay isn't going to cause it problems. The nickel-plated steel fastening loop adds to the overall durability without adding a lot of bulk.
