what exactly is a counterbalance valve and what's it doing in a hydraulic circuit?
Question by: Scott H on Jul 18, 2025, 10:34 AM
Counterbalance valves hold a load in place by maintaining back pressure on the return side of a cylinder or motor. Without one, a suspended or overhanning load can drift or free-fall if the pressure on the inlet side drops. This particular unit is a Sun Hydraulics design, sourced through Gulf Controls Corporation under part number CBCA-LAN.

So, this here Hydraforce counter balance... what's it actually do?

Designed to control a load being held by a hydraulic actuator, this valve prevents it from running ahead of the pump.

part number CBCA-LAN, is that the Sun Hydraulics counterbalance or is this a Hydraforce unit?
Question by: Norm B on Feb 24, 2026, 2:38 PM
Gulf Controls Corporation supplies this one under the Hydraforce brand, but the supplier part number CBCA-LAN does trace back to a Sun Hydraulics counterbalance valve configuration. Both names show up on this product because of how the supply chain and branding cross over on this particular valve family.
