what exactly is a counterbalance valve and what's it doing in a hydraulic circuit?

Gulf Controls Corporation supplies this one under the Hydraforce brand, but the supplier part number CBCA-LAN does trace back to a Sun Hydraulics counterbalance valve configuration. Both names show up on this product because of how the supply chain and branding cross over on this particular valve family.
