does this gasket work with standard cam and groove fittings or do i need something special to make it fit right

Standard A-A-59326 fittings are what this gasket is built around, so if your cam and groove setup follows that spec, it'll drop right in without any modifications. It also interchanges with DIN 2828 connections, which covers a pretty wide range of industrial setups. Just slide the adapter into the coupler, press the cam levers down with normal hand pressure, and you're coupled up. Nothing exotic required.

got a 3 inch camlock, is this the right gasket for it or is it some oddball size?

For a standard 3 inch cam and groove coupling built to A-A-59326 (also known as MIL-C-27487F) or DIN 2828 interchange standards, this 3 inch Buna-N gasket is the correct size and is meant to fit snug for a proper seal.
