Does this fitting need any kind of sealant on the threads, or does it seal up on its own?

No sealant needed on this one. The JIC 37-degree and SAE 45-degree flare design seals on the flare face itself, so putting thread sealant on there would actually be working against you. Just get the connection made up properly and you're good to go.

Will this here fitting work with a regular hydraulic hose, or do I need something special?

This fitting is designed for use with -04 size hose in a socketless configuration, so it needs the right type of hose to work properly.
