fitting says socketless reusable - does that mean I can pull it off the hose and put it back on a new one without wrecking it?

That's the point of the socketless design. No crimping equipment needed, and the fitting can be removed and reinstalled on a replacement hose rather than getting cut off and tossed. It's a practical setup for field repairs or situations where you're swapping hose runs more than once.
