what hose size does this barb splicer fit exactly, the 5/8 or something close to it?

Fits a 0.625 inch ID hose, which is the same as 5/8 inch. The barb is sized to grip that hose wall and hold position when a clamp is applied. Just make sure your hose matches that inner diameter before ordering, because barb fittings don't have much forgiveness on sizing.
