got a 3/8 hose and need to thread into a 1/4 NPT port. is this the right barb and thread combo?

For a 0.375 inch hose ID going into a 1/4-18 male NPT connection, that matches what this fitting is built for. It is a straight, short shank brass hose barb with 1/4-18 male NPT threads.

trying to swap out an old barb fitting here. is this one the kind that goes on 3/8 hose and then threads into 1/4 npt?

It is a short shank brass hose barb sized for 0.375 inch hose ID, and the threaded end is 1/4-18 male NPT in a straight configuration.

fitting's got a 3/8 hose barb on one end and quarter inch male NPT on the other, that right?

Correct on both counts. The barb end fits 0.375 inch inside diameter hose, and the threaded end is 1/4-18 male NPT for connecting to standard pipe fittings or ports. It threads in just like any other male NPT, so if you've got a female 1/4 NPT port on your equipment, this drops right in.
