fitting's made of brass so i'm guessing it handles general fluid lines okay, but what kind of applications is it actually built for?

Low pressure fluid transfer is the main use case here, both suction and discharge. The brass construction comes from free cutting CDA 360 alloy rod, which holds up well in those kinds of service conditions. It's not rated for high pressure hydraulic lines, so if that's what you're running, this one won't fit the bill.
