does this fitting need any kind of sealant or mandrel when you're putting it on, or does it just go straight on the hose?

No sealant and no mandrel required. That's actually one of the main advantages of the socketless design. You're working with a reusable brass fitting that connects directly to the -04 hose without any of that extra prep work. Makes the installation process a good bit simpler, especially out in the field where you don't always have every tool on hand.
