fitting says it needs a mandrel, is that something I gotta have on hand before I put this thing together, or can I get away without it?

A mandrel is required for proper assembly on this fitting. Skipping it isn't really an option if you want a solid, leak-free connection. It ensures the hose end forms correctly around the fitting components during installation. Without it, you risk an improper seal or early failure under pressure. If you don't already have one, get that sorted before you start the job.
