does this fitting work without any tools to put together, or do i need something special to get the tube locked in?

No tools needed for assembly. You push the tube straight into the fitting and the internal mechanism locks it in place. That makes it real handy when you're working in tight spots or need to swap things out fast without hunting down a wrench. The swivel feature on the NPT end also lets you position the elbow where you need it before tightening down to the port.
