Does this fitting actually work without a mandrel, or do I need any special tools to get it installed?

No mandrel needed. The socketless design lets you assemble and disassemble by hand without any special tooling. That's a real time saver when you're working in tight spots or swapping out lines in the field. Just make sure you're pairing it with a -08 hose and the threads on your port side are 1/2-14 NPT, and you're good to go.
