does this plug need thread sealant or does it seal up on its own?

Brass NPT threads cut on a taper, so they pull tight as you make up the joint. That mechanical interference is what creates the seal, and this plug is built to take advantage of that. No sealant required, which is one less thing to deal with during installation or when you pull it back out later.

got a port with 3/4-14 npt threads. is this the right plug for it?

With 3/4-14 male NPT threads, it’s meant to screw into a matching 3/4-14 NPT female port for a pipe-to-pipe style connection.
