does this fitting work without any thread sealant, or do i need to pick some up before i install it?

No sealant needed on this one. The 5/8-18 Female SAE 45-degree flare swivel connection handles the seal on its own, so you can skip that step entirely. Same goes for a mandrel during installation. Keeps the job straightforward without any extra supplies to track down.
