Does this fitting work for both refrigeration and hydraulic lines, or is it more of a one-or-the-other situation?

Both are fair game with this one. The 42X6 union is rated for refrigeration, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, along with instrumentation and power steering applications. The brass construction holds up well across those uses, and the 5/8-18 SAE 45 degree flare on both ends gives you a solid metal-to-metal seal so you're not relying on thread sealant to keep things tight.
