been trying to track down an adapter that'll go from a half-inch NPT male thread over to a 5/8-18 SAE 45 degree flare male, straight configuration. this the right one?

That's what this adapter does. One end is 1/2-14 Male NPT and the other is 5/8-18 Male SAE 45 degree flare, straight body, no angle. It's brass construction and the NPTF thread geometry means you won't need thread sealant on that end to get a leak-free connection. Fits right into hydraulic and pneumatic systems, power steering lines, refrigeration setups, and instrumentation work.

Will this here fitting work alright for hooking up a refrigeration system?

It's alright for refrigeration setups, as well as hydraulic, pneumatic, and instrumentation systems. It's also been used for LP and natural gas, but those are special order.
