Marine, military, chemical processing, pulp and paper, food and beverage, and offshore drilling are all listed applications for this fitting. It's an Eaton Aeroquip 2024 Series piece, so it's built to hold up in demanding environments. If your operation falls into any of those categories, you're in the right ballpark.

got a hose end that’s 9/16-18 JIC, and the port on the other side is 1/2-14 pipe. is this the 90 degree elbow that ties those together?

You’re on the right track. This adapter is a 90 degree elbow with a 1/2-14 male NPT connection on one end and a 9/16-18 male JIC 37 degree flare on the other, so it’s meant to mate those two thread types together.
