Both ends on this are 1-11/2 male NPT, right? Just making sure it ain't one male and one female before I order a handful of these.

Correct on both ends. The 1-11-1/2 male NPT thread runs on each side, so you're connecting male to male in a straight configuration. No female threads anywhere on this fitting. The hex body in the middle gives you a good grip point with a wrench when you're threading it into place between two female-ported components.

got a job where i need a straight brass hex nipple. is this one male npt on both ends, same size?

Yes. It is a straight hex nipple with male NPT threads on both ends, and both sides are 1-11-1/2 male NPT.
