what hoses is this spring guard actually compatible with?

Compatible hoses for this fitting are the H105, H115, and H338. As long as you're running one of those with a -08 hose size, you're in good shape. The brass construction handles corrosion well, which makes it a solid pick for air brake line work where moisture and road exposure are always a factor.

got a -08 air brake hose, is this the right end for it or am i mixing parts up

It’s meant for -08 hose and it’s a 338B Series field attachable air brake hose end with a spring guard. It’s also listed as compatible with Eaton Aeroquip H105, H115, and H338 hose.
