does this fitting work with H338 hose or is it only for the other types?

H338 is actually one of the three compatible hoses for this fitting, along with H105 and H115. All three work with this -06 size brass hose end, so you're good to go with H338.

Trying to hook this up to a -06 air brake hose, is the thread on this end 1/2 inch male NPT?

For air brake hose lines, it mates a -06 hose to a 0.50 inch male NPT connection. The end type is listed as PTF SAE Short, and the hex size is 0.969 inches.
