we run a grease system on some older equipment and need a straight 3/8 NPT adapter to extend a line. this the right part for that kind of setup?

Grease systems are one of the primary applications this adapter was built for. Both ends carry 3/8-18 NPT threads, so if your existing fittings and lines are already threaded to that spec, it should drop right in without any modification. The brass construction holds up well in that kind of service, and the NPTF thread form is designed to seal on its own without needing tape or paste, though some assemblers still use a light thread sealant out of habit.
