trying to hook 5/8 nylon air brake line to a 3/8 npt port, is this the right fitting or am i off a size

Fit wise, it’s made for 0.625 inch tube OD (5/8) on the tube side and a 3/8-18 male NPT thread on the other end, straight style. It’s also specified for NT100 Nylon Tubing that meets SAE J844 Type A and B.

fitting says it works with nylon tubing -- does that mean both type A and type B from SAE J844, or just one of em?

Both types are covered. SAE J844 Type A and Type B nylon tubing are both compatible with this fitting, so you don't have to worry about which variant you're running. The tube outer diameter just needs to be 0.625 inches, and you're good to go without any flaring or tube prep before assembly.
