does this fitting work with plastic tubing or do I need something extra for that

For most plastic tubing, you'll need a 2030 insert alongside this fitting. The exception is Eaton PT230 tubing, which doesn't require one. Outside of that, aluminum and copper tubing go straight in without any additional pieces.
