fitting says it works with plastic tubing but do I need anything extra for that to work right?

Most plastic tubing will need a 2030 insert before this fitting will seal properly. The exception is Eaton PT230 tubing, which works without the insert. Steel tubing is not compatible with this fitting at all, so stick to plastic, copper, or aluminum and you should be in good shape.
