Does this valve hold up okay for compressed air lines, or is it really more of a water valve?

Both, actually. Water process hydraulic lines and air supply systems are the two main uses for this valve. It handles up to 30 PSI, so as long as your line pressure stays within that range, it works fine for either application. The brass body and plug are individually lapped and mated together, which keeps friction low and operation smooth whether you're running air or water through it.

got a 1/4 pipe line already, is this one male on one end and female on the other or am i reading it wrong

Threading is 1/4 inch male NPT on one side and 1/4 inch female NPT on the other, so it works as an inline shutoff between a female port and a male pipe end.
