got a 1/4 npt port on the bottom of my gauge block. is this one a bottom mount with a male fitting or am i gonna need adapters?

Comes with a 1/4 NPT bottom connection and it is a male brass fitting, so it threads into a female 1/4 NPT port. It also includes a 0.013 inch throttle plug in that male connection.

Running a hydraulic press that gets pretty rough pulsation through the lines, will the liquid fill actually help keep the needle steady, or is that more of a marketing thing?

Liquid filling makes a real difference in pulsating systems. The glycerin or similar fill dampens needle movement so you get a readable, stable display instead of a needle bouncing all over the place. That said, if pulsation is present in your process, keep your operating pressure at or below 50% of full scale. On a 4,000 PSI gauge, that means staying under 2,000 PSI in those conditions. The brass connection also includes a 0.013" throttle plug, which further reduces pressure spikes reaching the internals.
