For most solid particulate and water contamination coming off a typical shop compressor, a 5 micron element handles the bulk of it just fine. Where you'd need to step up is if oil aerosols are a concern. This filter can actually be swapped to a coalescing element that pulls oil aerosols and particles down to 0.3 micron, so you've got room to upgrade without replacing the whole unit. The 40 micron element is also available separately if you ever need coarser prefiltration upstream. For a dirty line situation, pairing a standard 5 micron stage with a downstream coalescing filter in the F-R-L sequence would give you solid protection across the board.

For garage air setups, this filter's aluminum body and nylon bowl guard are built to withstand high-pressure environments, with a max inlet pressure of 150 psi for polycarbonate bowls and 250 psi for metal bowls.
