What exactly does a wiper ring do, and is urethane a good material for it?

Rod wipers sit at the outer edge of a hydraulic cylinder and scrape contaminants off the rod as it retracts, keeping dirt, grit, and moisture from getting pulled back into the system. Urethane handles that job well because it holds up against abrasion better than a lot of other elastomers, which matters when the rod is cycling through dusty or debris-heavy environments. The temperature range on this one runs from -65°F all the way up to 220°F, so it covers most industrial conditions without issue.
