got a cylinder with a 1.123 rod, is this AN-11 wiper the right size or am i off a hair

Fit comes down to the rod diameter and the groove outside diameter. This AN-11 is sized for a 1.123 inch rod and a 1.397 inch groove OD, so it matches those dimensions for an AN-style groove.

What exactly does this wiper ring do in a hydraulic cylinder setup, and is urethane a good material for that job?

Wiper rings sit at the outer end of a hydraulic cylinder rod assembly and keep dirt, dust, and debris from getting past the seal area as the rod strokes in and out. Urethane holds up well in that role because it resists abrasion and maintains its shape under repeated mechanical contact. The temperature window on this one runs from -65°F all the way up to 220°F, so it covers most industrial hydraulic environments without any real concern about the material breaking down at either extreme.

The groove OD (outer diameter) is 1.397 inches, and it's designed for a standard AN-profile groove. The rod diameter it fits is 1.123 inches.
