can this thing handle compressed air lines? got a setup where we run both air and liquid and trying to figure out if this fitting works for both

Cam and groove couplings of this type are not rated for compressed air under any circumstances. That restriction applies across the board for cam lock fittings, not just this one. For liquid service it handles up to 150 PSI in the 1-1/2" size, but air lines need a different type of coupling entirely.

got a 1-1/2 inch cam lock coupler already, will this male adapter swap in with it?

Interchangeability is built around the A-A-59326 standard (which supersedes MIL-C-27487F) and also DIN 2828, so it will mate with couplers made to those same standards. The note about non-interchangeable sizes applies to 1/2 inch and 8 inch, not 1-1/2 inch.

got a 1-1/2 camlock setup already. will this male shank piece interchange with other brands or am i gonna fight it?

As long as your other cam and groove parts are made to A-A-59326 or DIN 2828, this 1-1/2 inch male adapter is meant to interchange and couple normally.
