does this cap work with standard cam and groove setups, or is it some proprietary thing i'd need special parts for

Fits right in with any cam and groove system built to standard A-A-59326 or DIN 2828, so compatibility with existing setups is pretty much a given. The 1-1/2 inch size is covered under the 150 PSI pressure rating, and the coupling and uncoupling process is straightforward, slide it in, press the cam levers down, lift them back up to remove. No special tooling or proprietary hardware needed.

need a dust cap for a 1-1/2 camlock, is this the right size?

For a 1-1/2 inch cam and groove connection, this is a 1-1/2 inch aluminum dust cap made to interchange with other cam and groove products built to A-A-59326 or DIN 2828, so it is intended to match standard 1-1/2 camlock sizing.

Yeah, this dust cap is designed for use with liquids, and the Buna-N seal should do a good job of keeping water out.
