trying to match up an o-ring i pulled off a hydraulic fitting. is this one really 1/2 inch on the outside with a 3/16 width?

For a 1/2 inch outer diameter application, yeah, this one lines up. The OD runs exactly 1/2 inch with a 3/16 inch width, so if your current seal matches those dimensions, this should drop right in as a replacement. Just make sure your groove is sized for that 3/16 width before you pull the trigger on it.
