trying to figure out what i’m even looking at here, what does a shaft seal retainer do on a Permco 124 motor?

Keeps the shaft seal properly held in place so the motor maintains sealing where the shaft passes through, which helps prevent leaks and keeps the assembly together the way it should.

Keeps the shaft seal properly seated and held in place during motor operation. Without it doing its job, the seal can shift or back out under pressure, which leads to leaks at the shaft. It's a retention component, so its whole purpose is keeping that seal where it belongs inside the motor assembly.
