trying to hook a JIS line up to a BSPT port with a little angle, is that what this elbow is for?

Built for joining two different male thread standards, it gives you a 45 degree turn between a Male JIS connection and a Male BSPT connection so you can route a hydraulic line without a hard straight shot.

What exactly is the thread setup on this fitting, is it JIS on one end and BSPT on the other, or are both ends the same?

One end is Male JIS and the other is Male BSPT, so it's built specifically to connect two different thread standards at a 45-degree angle. That makes it useful when you've got a Japanese-made component on one side and a British Standard Pipe Taper port on the other and need to bring them together without a straight-line run.
